Overview

A family of merchants traveling through the Dutch East Indies colonial territories sought to profit from others’ suffering—they were Mbok Wantun and her children. The shrewd and cunning Mbok Wantun, along with Edi, Susi, and Tini—her adopted children who were also, in truth, her loyal servants—used their adoptive mother’s cart to navigate all the vicissitudes of their journey.
